Mapule* was a very desperate young girl when she contacted Childline. She had experienced great trauma after her mother passed away and her dad had disappeared. Determined to move on with her life, Mapule’s dream of writing her Matric was being thwarted by not having a birth certificate. Despite many visits to the Department of Home Affairs over a period of two years, three weeks before the Matric registration date, she still did not have an identity number. Childline phoned the Director General for Home Affairs and he gave instructions that her birth certificate be issued immediately. Mapule wrote her exams and we helped her to achieve her dream of a Matric certificate.
